The Florida TLSAE Drug and Alcohol Course is required for applicable first-time Florida driver license applicants age 18 or older. Florida law provides exemptions for applicants who have already been licensed in another jurisdiction or who have satisfactorily completed an eligible Department of Education driver education course.

• Age 18 and older: Applicable first-time driver license applicants must complete the TLSAE course before completing the Florida licensing process.
• Previously licensed applicants: Applicants who have already been licensed in another jurisdiction are exempt from the TLSAE requirement under Florida law. 

The TLSAE curriculum covers Florida-required topics, including:

• Florida traffic laws and safe motor-vehicle operation
• The effects of alcohol and drugs on driving ability
• The physiological, psychological, societal, and economic effects of substance abuse
• Driver attitudes and risky behaviors such as speeding, reckless driving, and running red lights or stop signs
• Motorcyclist, bicyclist, and pedestrian safety
• The dangers and effects of using electronic devices while driving

The Florida Drug and Alcohol Course — formally called the Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course — is a 4-hour program required for applicable first-time Florida driver license applicants age 18 and older. The course is approved by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) and helps students complete the required education before moving forward with the Florida Class E licensing process.

The course covers Florida traffic laws, the effects of alcohol and drugs on driving performance, safe driving practices, driver responsibility, and other required safety topics. It is not a defensive driving or traffic-ticket dismissal course; it is specifically designed to satisfy Florida’s TLSAE education requirement.

Get Drivers Ed’s TLSAE course is fully online and self-paced. Students can start, pause, and resume the course on any compatible device. After successfully completing the required 4 hours and all course requirements, completion is reported electronically to FLHSMV.
