Yes, telehandler operators must be certified as per OSHA standard 1910.178(I), which applies to telehandlers and other powered industrial trucks. Certification involves formal instruction, hands-on training, and an operator evaluation. Operators must also be at least 18 years old. Our online training fulfills the formal instruction requirement. After completing the course, your employer will provide practical training and conduct an evaluation to ensure you can safely operate a telehandler.
To earn your telehandler certification and certificate, you’ll need to pass a short quiz after each module and a comprehensive final exam. The course includes six module quizzes, requiring a passing score of 80% or higher. You can retake the quizzes as many times as needed. The final exam has 20 questions, and you must score at least 70% to pass. You’ll also have unlimited attempts to pass the exam. After completing the course, your employer will demonstrate how to operate the equipment specific to your jobsite and explain any associated hazards. Certification is completed once you pass an employer-led evaluation.
After finishing the course, you’ll receive a Powered Industrial Truck Operator Evaluation Form. Provide this form to your employer for use during your operator evaluation. Your employer will: Demonstrate how to operate the telehandler you’ll be using. Discuss any specific hazards present in your work environment. Conduct a performance evaluation to ensure you can safely operate a telehandler. Once you pass the evaluation and both you and your employer sign the evaluation form, you’ll officially be certified to operate a telehandler.
Your telehandler certification is valid for three years. Once it expires, you’ll need to complete another operator evaluation conducted by your employer. For safety, it’s recommended to complete refresher training every three years.
OSHA requires refresher training under specific circumstances, including: Operating a telehandler in an unsafe manner. Being involved in an accident or near-miss incident with a telehandler. Failing an operator evaluation. Being assigned to a new type of telehandler. Experiencing workplace changes that could affect telehandler operation. In addition to these scenarios, OSHA mandates an employer-led evaluation every three years to maintain certification.
You must be at least 18 years old to legally operate a telehandler.
Yes, you have 90 days to complete the course after registering. Be sure to finish within this period to retain access and complete your training.
