Sign Up
Enroll in the New York Defensive Driving / Point & Insurance Reduction Program (PIRP) Sign up with a DMV-approved provider (online or in-person).

Complete the Course
Finish the 6-hour defensive driving course. This can usually be done in one day or split into sessions.

Receive Your Certificate of Completion
After completing the course, you’ll receive an official certificate (electronically or by mail).

Submit Your Certificate
For insurance discount: Send the certificate to your insurance company to receive up to a 10% discount for 3 years. For ticket/point reduction: The DMV will automatically apply a 4-point reduction on your driving record. (Note: this doesn’t remove the violation, but reduces the total points counted against you.)
