Texas Parent-Taught Driver Education (PTDE) is a 32-hour program approved by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). It allows a qualifying parent or guardian to serve as the primary driving instructor for their teen.
The online classroom portion is completed through this course at your own pace, while the in-car training hours are completed with your approved parent instructor. The PTDE program gives families complete control over the schedule for both classroom and in-car training.
The teen must be between 14 and 17 years of age at the time of enrollment. The parent or guardian acting as the driving instructor must hold a valid Texas driver's license, have at least 7 years of licensed driving experience, and must not have been convicted of certain traffic violations within the past 7 years.
Before starting the course, the student must obtain the official PTDE packet directly from the Texas DPS. The packet includes the required forms and instructions for completing the parent-taught program.
The online classroom portion covers all content required under the Texas PTDE program:
1
Enroll in our Texas Online Teen Drivers Ed – Parent Taught course with Get Drivers Ed. A $20 TDLR fee must be paid to confirm the parent’s eligibility as the driving instructor. Complete the 24-hour state-approved online course at your own pace.
2
After completing the required hours of classroom training, present your completion certificate and required documents at the Texas DPS. Pass the written knowledge test to obtain your learner’s permit.
3
With your learner’s permit, complete 44 hours of supervised driving (including 10 hours at night) with your parent-instructor. Once ready, schedule and take your DPS road skills test.
4
Pass the DPS road test and meet all GDL (Graduated Driver Licensing) requirements to receive your official Texas driver’s license, allowing you to drive independently.
Get Drivers Ed's parent-taught course is approved by both Texas DPS and TDLR. The online classroom portion is fully self-paced — teens can log in from any device and continue exactly where they left off.
Once the classroom portion is complete, your course completion certificate is available instantly. The course is structured to align with the official state PTDE requirements, so families always know exactly what has been completed and what remains.
