Texas instructor-taught teen drivers ed is a 32-hour driver education program delivered online by a TDLR- licensed driving school , with all classroom instruction led by certified instructors — not by a parent or guardian. The course is TDLR-approved (Course # C3429) and approved by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) , and is regulated by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).
Teens complete the classroom portion entirely online, working at their own pace through video lessons, interactive modules, and instructor-guided units. Once classroom hours are complete, the school issues the DE-964 certificate of completion — the document Texas DPS requires before a teen can take the licensing tests. It's one of several state-approved ways to complete online drivers ed in Texas.
This course is built for Texas teens between 14 and 17 years of age. There is no parent-eligibility paperwork to file — unlike the Parent-Taught (PTDE) path, the school is the legal instructor of record, so families do not need to request the PTDE packet from Texas DPS or meet the 7-year licensed-driver requirement for a parent instructor.
To enroll, the student needs a working device with internet access, a valid email address, and a parent or guardian to register on the student's behalf if under 18. This path suits families who want a fully classroom-led experience or who do not meet PTDE parent-instructor requirements.
The 32-hour classroom curriculum follows the full Texas DPS / TDLR drivers education syllabus :
Note: this is a teen licensing course — if you already hold a Texas license and need a ticket dismissed, that's Texas defensive driving, a separate 6-hour course.
The 32 classroom hours are completed online; behind-the-wheel practice is separate, and many families pair the course with Texas in-car driving lessons.
The choice comes down to who teaches the classroom portion and whether your family wants to manage state paperwork directly.
Texas Parent-Taught Drivers Ed (PTDE) is the right path when a qualifying parent or guardian wants to act as the legal instructor and you're comfortable ordering the PTDE packet from Texas DPS yourself.
Texas Instructor-Taught Drivers Ed (this course) is the right path when families prefer a TDLR-licensed instructor to deliver the classroom content, when the parent does not meet PTDE eligibility, or when you'd rather skip the DPS packet step entirely. Both paths produce a DE-964 certificate that satisfies Texas DPS.
